With GEO-MRI | NMR Technology Into Thin Air

Updated: Aug 25, 2023

Whoa! Now we are finally here: In Peru at lofty 12,000+ ft above sea level. Up here, breathing is definitely a bit harder than usual (especially after the sumptuous meals at our Basecamp...) But this is quickly forgotten in view of the breathtaking scenery - especially if you come here with (my) standard (rudimentary) knowledge of the country's incredible high culture. Considering the fact that the Incas were the absolute masters when it comes to "land and resource use", the bar for the modern cultures of our time is, of course, immensely high. We are impressed every day, seeing with our own eyes, learning, and acknowledging that our modern high culture is also doing its best to use these resources as sparingly as possible. And to finally get to the point: Here, in the Yanacocha Mine | Peru, "Gold" is extracted from our Earth on an ultra-grand scale. Where Incas used herbs and other ancient techniques to extract this precious metal from the soil and the rocks, nowadays super-heavy equipment and all associated tools and craftsmanship is applied in order to accomplish this goal.

Vista-Clara Inc. NMR-Logging Campaign at the world's largest goldmine: Yanacocha, Peru. Fantastic vistas, combined with enormous team effort and an incredible spirit all along, that makes our work almost feel like a breeze of fresh air that is difficult to grasp at this high altitude. An absolut fantastic work- and life experience!

For many people, "gold" almost falls under the category: "socially difficult to digest". On top of that: "Mining" - paired with each other, those two form a very strong irritant topic - sure enough also among the surrounding communities. Not necessarily something one cannot comprehend, given the enormity of this open-pit mining operation.

However, one may also ask oneself who nowadays does not own and use om a daily base a smartphone, computer | laptop, semiconductor, and many more technical gadgets and items that contain at least little bits and pieces of gold. Given the fact that "Water" is a very precious component in all of this, our work with the GEO-MRI | NMR-Technology of Vista-Clara Inc., of course, supports the sophisticated and complex water management system of the mine, and thus consequently affects the supply for and quality of "Water" of the entire region. We like to point out that the mine operator attaches great importance to the fact that "Water", as a valuable basic good for every organism, is managed as carefully and proactively as possible to protect the human health and entire environment from misuse of the vital resource "Water". Yet, before we could even get started with our NMR-Logging Campaign, at first we were entirely occupied with being instructed about the many safety rules and potential dangers on site (in technical jargon: "HSE" | Health-Safety-Environment). At the end of this 3-day "Induction", we were professionally assessed by a supervisor from the mine operator. He promptly "invited" us to "first clean up a bit at our workplace" and support our colleagues who hired us for this NMR-Logging Campaign. So we did :-)

Prior to running our NMR-Logging Campaign with Vista-Clara tools, we were kindly invited to help our colleagues who provided the logistics and technical support for our campaign, to help cleaning up residual trash at our equipment shed. It also acts as a shelter against sometimes fierce thunderstorms, forcing everyone to hide immediately in a safe spot.

In sum, being up here for a few days in this incredible environment:

So far I am very excited about our GEO-MRI | NMR-Logging adventure in Peru! I will be even more thrilled, when our NMR profiles make sense in the context of other stratigraphic data obtained at every site, and thereby add value to the evaluation and eventually optimal use of the natural resources of the Yanacocha Mine | Peru.
